If your weight loss plan, so far, has hinged pretty closely on calorie intake, it might be time to look to another source to help you shed those unwanted pounds. According to a new study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, your bones could hold the secret to effective weight loss.
Researchers from the University of Gothenburg conducted studies on rodents to get to the bottom of how and why our bodies stay at one weight. To test their hypothesis, they did three different experiments. In the first, they implanted a capsule in the rodents that would increase their body mass by approximately 15 percent. Two days later, the rodents were compensating for their weight gain by eating less.
In a second experiment, they did the same procedure, but performed it on rodents who had leptin, which produced fat cells in their bodies. But the results were the same: the rats ate less because they knew they had gained.
Finally, in the third, the rodents had notably weaker bone cells that work to recognize increased weight gain. In this case, the rats did not try to eat less to lose weight and continued eating the same amount they previously had consumed.
So what does it mean for us? The researchers infer that it means that living beings who have healthy and strong bones are able to recognize when there is weight gain and work to keep it off.
And, most of all, it supports the notion that a sedentary life dangerous. They don’t say “sitting is the new smoking” for nothing. Hint: get that standing desk you’ve been eyeing!

That means ditching your chair and embracing standing should be a top priority. Stairs instead of elevators can help you move more (and get those 10,000 steps per day) and and improve your bone health. Taking walking meetings, or pacing back and forth as you take a phone call, can give you those much-needed steps and health benefits you’ve been needing.
And it could all lead to better, and more powerful, weight loss.
